Description
Handcrafted original aircraft skin from an outer rim of the main landing gear of Concorde.
The Aérospatiale/BAC Concorde is a supersonic airliner jointly developed and manufactured by Sud Aviation (later Aérospatiale) and the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC). Concorde was the most technically ambitious project in aviation history, the bullet-shaped fuselage and futuristic delta wings made it possible to break the sound barrier with its four Rolls-Royce/Snecma Olympus 593 Mk 610 turbojet engines. As the most recognizable and iconic airliner in history, Concorde served as a symbol of pride for the British and the French.
Flying at Mach 2, it took only three hours for a transatlantic flight, even faster than the rotation of the Earth. So if you took off from London at dusk, you would land in New York in the afternoon, hence the slogan “Arrive Before You Leave”!
There is no doubt that Concorde was successful in terms of engineering, but it also came at the wrong time. The oil crisis and the aircraft’s sonic boom cost it almost all its customers. By the time it finally entered commercial service on 21 January 1976, the only operators remaining were British Airways and Air France. One year later, Concorde was finally cleared to land at JFK airport in New York, opening the next chapter of its story.
Time is money. The ticket for a Concorde flight was around 20 to 30 times more expensive than an economy class ticket. Nevertheless, there were enough business passengers, celebrities and fans to make the LHR-JFK and CDG-JFK routes profitable. More options were also provided, such as flights on demand for companies, charter flights for travel agencies and round-the-world trips for anyone who could pay. Almost 4,000,000 passengers in total have travelled on board Concorde.
On 26 November 2003, G-BOAF, the last Concorde produced, returned to its birthplace at Filton Airfield, where it landed as the last Concorde ever flown... Following the retirement of the fleet, the airline sent some of the original Concorde parts to an auction held in April 2004, the famous Concorde DoveBid auction.
An outer rim from the main landing gear of Concorde with the part number AHA1216 was listed as lot number 5385 for the auction. As a highly swappable part, we were unable to determine the operation history for this outer rim. But the unmistakable blue colour speaks for itself as a unique Concorde piece. Although experiencing many technical challenges cutting this structurally complicated rim into tags while preserving the original paint from being damaged, we still managed to complete the crafting process and finally made these amazing tags.
And now, ladies and gentlemen, our third Concorde edition, crafted from an outer rim of the landing gear, literally lands as these heavy Airlinertags!
