Handcrafted original aircraft skin from an AIRBUS A330-300.

The Airbus A330 is a medium to long-range wide-body twin-engine airliner produced by the Airbus Group. Its fuselage design is derived from the A300, while the cockpit and fly-by-wire control system are derived from the A320. The A330 and the four-engine Airbus A340 were developed simultaneously, sharing the majority of components such as fuselage, wings, except for the engines.

Originally aimed to compete directly with the Boeing 767 in the ETOPS market, Despite being born at the heyday of the Boeing 747-400, as well as the three-engine airliners like the DC-10, MD-11, and L-1011 in the 1990s, despite most of Airbus' focus on projects like the A320, A340, and A380, despite overshadowed by the larger Boeing 777 and Airbus A350 despite facing direct competition from the much more advanced Boeing 787, the A330 still surprised many by becoming the most delivered wide-body twin-engine aircraft in the world after over 30 years from its first flight, with its lower unit cost as well as its suitable range and payload.

The rise of the Airbus A330 is highly related to the growth of the aviation market in Asia-Pacific. Asiana Airlines from South Korean, for example, started operations of the Airbus A330-300s shortly after becoming a full Star Alliance member, expanding its worldwide network and global brand. The airline had a fleet of fifteen Airbus A330s for mid-range routes.

On November 10, 2004, the Airbus A330-323 MSN 640 took its maiden flight at Toulouse with its PW4168A engines. The brand-new airliner, registered as HL7736, became the first Airbus A330 to be delivered to Asiana Airlines in a C30Y260 configuration on December 20, 2004.

During its career for 20 years, HL7736 has been shuttling between Seoul and many Asian destinations, including various Chinese cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dalian, Changchun, Harbin, Qingdao, Hangzhou, Taipei, and Hong Kong; Several Japanese cities like Tokyo, Osaka,Nagoya, Fukuoka, Sapporo and Okinawa; Some of the southeast Asian cities like Ho Chi Minh City, Manila, Bangkok, Cebu and lastly a few other capitals like Ulaanbaatar, Tashkent, and Almaty. The airliner has accumulated over 20,000 flights before finally being retired.

On November 17, 2024, HL7736 operated its last commercial flight OZ123 from Nagoya to Seoul. It was then ferried to St. Athan in the UK January 3, 2025 for recycling, becoming the first Asiana Airbus A330 to exit the fleet and been broken up. We have managed to acquire a fairly limited amount of skins with special colours against a very tight schedule of teardown. Considering Asiana's integration with Korean Air in 2026, this is also our best chance to save some pieces of such a wonderful airline from the passing aviation history.

Welcome to the Airlinertags family, HL7736!
